TransSpeedEurope
This is the first report of the Trans Speed Europe,
the last performance from Mad Mike Kung: crossing the Europe from
north to south, from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean.
Day one
On the 25th of
April the adventure started. Using three camper all the Mad Mike Kung
team moved to the north up to Wasserkuppe, the most famous German
free flight spot that will be the base camp for the first days of
the adventure.
During the night, the camera crew (named ‘NPB’:
Driving Napalm Bomb) moved to Lubeck on the Baltic Sea shore. There
in the morning of the 26th, they have been joined by Mike and his
helicopter team. The starting conditions were not perfect, the sky
was a bit overcast with a sensible west wind, but the forecast was
to have an incoming north wind during the day. Mike jumped the first
time just above the Baltic shore and started his first glide heading
to the Mediterranean Sea. The glide was not fast and few kilometres
far he found his first trouble of the adventure: a rain fall not strong
but enough to get wet in all his equipment. The first glide ended
just after 12 kilometres but he was lucky, the rain stopped and he
has been able to fold his glider for the second jump of the day. “What
a strange sensation” he reported, “The opening shock with
the wet glider was more smooth and precise than the other”.
During the day the conditions improved slightly, there have been no
more rainfall and the wind changed to north. Mike’s glide improved
significantly, generally, jumping from an altitude of 2500 metres
he was able to glide for more than 40 kilometres. The last landing
was at 20.30 just in time for the sunset. Totally, in the day he jumped
eight times and flew for roughly 200 kilometres reaching Bad Harzburg.
